What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas….but not D.C.

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Interesting article I read today about the firings of nine (9) Washington D.C. government workers.  Apparently these workers were looking at pornography on their work computers.  And I’m not talking about a one time or occasional occurrence…I’m talking about the heavily addicted, ‘were you ever working?’ kind.  (They averaged about 200 times per work day in 2007.)

The reason I find this so interesting is because most normal people (non computer geeks) don’t realize just how easy it is to trace this kind of activity on a computer.  In this instance, the workers were caught because the government installed an expensive, powerful software product which monitored their computer activity.  Now…would you really want to lose your job over a quick sneak peek?

My point is this.  Make sure you understand that when you use the Internet, you can be watched.  By your employer, your spouses and thanks to the Patriot Act…your government.  So if you plan on browsing the web…do something constructive and make a difference.  That’s all I ask.

Open Office Logo

Did you know there is a FREE office software product called OpenOffice that is an alternative to Microsoft Office? This software is especially helpful for anyone who does not have a copy of Microsoft Office, can’t afford MS Office or just wants to try out something new, free and/or different. I use this software on a daily basis and I highly recommend it to all my clients. It’s great for creating letters, flyers and other documents, spread sheets and csv file imports for our online shopping cart, business presentations and even databases. To get more information or to download the software, visit OpenOffice.org
