Census Bureau Releases 2nd Quarter 2008 Ecom Sales Stats

The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the second quarter of 2008, adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes, was $34.6 billion, an increase of 2.9 percent (±1.0%) from the first quarter of 2008. Total retail sales for the second quarter of 2008 were estimated at $1,034.8 billion, an increase of 0.9 percent (±0.3%) from the first quarter of 2008. The second quarter 2008 e-commerce estimate increased 9.5 percent (±1.2%) from the second quarter of 2007 while total retail sales increased 2.5 percent (±0.5%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the second quarter of 2008 accounted for 3.3 percent of total sales.

On a not adjusted basis, the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the second quarter of 2008 totaled $32.5 billion, an increase of 0.5 percent (±1.0%)* from the first quarter of 2008. The second quarter 2008 e-commerce estimate increased 8.9 percent (±1.2%) from the second quarter of 2007 while total retail sales increased 2.3 (±0.5%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the second quarter of 2008 accounted for 3.1 percent of total sales.

Great news for online merchants!!

Ecommerce just continues to grow and creep into the overall percentage of retail sales. The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2008, adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes, was $33.8 billion, an increase of 0.8 percent (±1.0%)* from the fourth quarter of 2007. Total retail sales for the first quarter of 2008 were estimated at $1,024.2 billion, an increase of 0.1 percent (±0.2%)* from the fourth quarter of 2007. The first quarter 2008 e-commerce estimate increased 13.6 percent (±1.2%) from the first quarter of 2007 while total retail sales increased 2.8 percent (±0.2%) in the same period.
